Paula asked, 'Did you and Daniel have a good talk?'
Franzi hesitated, 'I think so. We talked about how he and Helga met at a carnival. She's even managing a dunking booth right now.'
Paula said, 'I guess it wouldn't be a lot of fun without some games. Are you having a good time?'
Franzi answered, 'Only cause I'm with you' and kissed Paula's lips.
Paula and Franzi's exploring went for 5 miles of people wearing Pride t-shirts, shouting out slogans, and everybody showing their own pride. Franzi wanted to ride a roller coaster but Paula was a little protective.
Franzi said, 'Paula, I can handle a single ride on a coaster. It's not like I'm going to ride it 10 times in a row.'
Paula responded, 'Whoa, good. Because I don't know if I have the stomach for that many turns, falls, and loops.'
Franzi said, 'That's why I'm only going 3 times.' Paula panicked and Franzi laughed at Paula's face. 'Ha ha.'
Franzi went for her coaster ride and Paula got some mango/pear Gelato. When Franzi's car was ready for its first high fall, Paula yelled 'GO, FRANZI' and held up Franzi's Gelato like a torch. Franzi's car mate told her the best way to enjoy a coaster was to let her hands go for the fall.
Franzi asked, 'Are you crazy? This is a mile high fall!'
The man said, 'You won't fall out. Trust me.'
Franzi patted the bar and said, 'This is all I trust' and then the car went down. 'Holy shit. OH MY GOD!' And the screaming never stopped.
Paula and Franzi competed in Tug of War with them, a group of same sex couples, against actors portraying real life idiots alongside muscle bound guys who pretended to be homophobic Bible thumpers. The rules were that nobody could add extra weight to their side by sitting down as an anchor. It was obvious that the homophobes were ideal to lose at Pride but they still give it their all before being pulled into the 3 ft. deep mud pool.
In keeping with his character's voice, the Bush actor asked, 'Don't you realize that if I lose, than the enemies of all that is pure and right with the world win? And that is something that my daddy, George Sr., would not want. No siree, Bob.'
This provoked only one loud response from all the winners and the spectators, 'SHUT UP, GEORGE!' And the icing on the cake was a fire hose pouring George W. out of the hole and into the fields.
Paula said, 'That man's career has gone down faster than his predecessor's pants.'
Franzi agreed, 'And not all too soon enough.' This made Paula and Franzi grin all the way to the next concession stand. Paula caught her breath while Franzi went for a soda. But something caught Paula's eyes on fire.
As part of her community service, Emily was serving at the dunk booth. Paula stepped up to the dunk booth line and got Emily squared in her sights. It was a few days after Franzi's release and Paula had still not let go of her anger towards Emily. What a treat it would be for Emily to suffer the humiliation over and over for a worthy cause. But then Paula had thought about what Franzi would want. This was about them being together and Franzi wouldn't want their time to be tainted by anger or the settling of old scores or mediocre violence. So Paula just made a contribution of 5£ to the European Leukemia Society. But by the time Emily had wiped her head dry she saw Paula's eyes. Paula looked at Emily like a hungry predator and that made it harder for Emily to sit down.
Thinking that Paula had paid for her tosses, Emily sat down almost hyperventilating. But instead of acting on her own impulses, Paula looked at Emily with contempt and walked away. Paula didn't even know that Franzi had seen the whole ordeal.
Bryan Adams' "Summer of '69" was playing outside Mocca when Paula and Franzi made it back over. Daniel was serving Mai Latte of different varieties. When more music started playing, Paula and Franzi started dancing together. Instead of kissing Paula's cheek, Franzi decided to reveal something.
Franzi said, 'I have something to tell you.'
Paula asked, 'What is that?'
Franzi answered, 'I saw you and Emily today.' Then Franzi let Paula sink it in and she finished, 'And I am very proud of you.' In that moment, Paula had taken a step back from revenge and anger and she moved forward stronger than she had already been. Before she realized that truth, Paula lowered her head in shame for how she felt this afternoon; even though she didn't act on her impulses against Emily. Franzi put her fingers on Paula's hair, then said 'Hey.'
Paula touched Franzi's hand and looked at her. This was just how Franzi felt Paula's hair when her hair was wet. 'This isn't the time for guilt or shame.' Paula agreed.
Franzi said, 'This is a time for happiness.' Paula agreed and said, 'You're right.'
When Paula and Franzi got back to the flatshare around 8:00 at night, they were more than ready to crash into bed. But not before some more rantings about how some of their friends acted, and some fairly juvenile behavior on their own parts.
Paula said, 'And thank you for the "She's With Me" shirt.'
Franzi joked, 'What can I say? I didn't want to stick out so I thought..'
Paula finished, 'You thought buying something would make you a little invisible' and both Franzi and Paula nodded "Yes".
Paula said, 'So it wasn't bad at all.'
Franzi said, 'Not at all. I don't think I'll be riding any coasters anytime soon, though.'
Paula said, 'Well, so long as you had a good time.'
Franzi asked, 'What about you? Did you have some fun?'
Paula answered, 'With you there? Of course I did. And my favorite part was hosing down the bible idiots and the president. How many people can say they did that?'
Franzi replied, 'I counted only 4 others holding that hose with you today.'
Franzi said, 'I'm just going to do some writing in my diary before I call it a night' and she tucked herself into bed beside Paula.
Paula responded, 'That's cool. I'm reading some T.H. Lawrence but I'll keep it all quiet. I'm sure you'll be getting plenty of sleep tonight.' Then Paula kissed Franzi's lips.
Franzi said, 'Good night' and kissed Paula's lips.
Paula said, 'Good night' and got to her readings.
It didn't take long for Franzi or Paula to get relaxed after today's festivities. Their experience today was just like a regular carnival with all the trimmings; with some exquisite settings.
