Without even knowing it, Paula had put in for the day off on her and Franzi's anniversary. The very next day, after kissing and making out, Franzi and Paula spent their anniversary in Munstertal. Paula had the entire day off so they took their time and started talking about what living there would be like. The cottage was set away from Munstertal, surrounded by blue pine trees. There was a shallow fishing stream and there was a cliff 10 kilometers away.
Paula asked, 'Did Thomas ever say what the winters were like?'
Franzi answered, 'No. But Papa said that it barely went below -3° Fahrenheit. But we have plenty of time to plan ahead for the winter.'
Paula said, 'True. Well I guess we can get a taste for some fresh air, maybe do some fishing. I can climb the hills.'
Franzi finished, 'And I can do my schoolwork from the cottage. So....is that a yes?'
Paula responded, 'You tell me. Was that a yes?' And Franzi squealed in excitement, 'YES!'
Paula had one more question to ask. 'When it rains, does the land flood very heavy?'
Franzi took Paula and asked, 'Are you asking me if..' then Franzi hit play on the stereo and finished 'the tide is high' and she and Paula started dancing to Blondie's "The Tide Is High".
All the arrangements took a week. As a favor to her, Daniel put in a good word with the owner of The Reganbogen, otherwise known as The Rainbow.
Paula said, 'Good for you. It'll do you fine to stay on the working horse.'
Franzi said, 'It's not set in stone yet. I'll still be working on my A Levels from the cottage and the owner of The Rainbow is willing to have a set schedule for me; so I'll be working the same time and have the same days off every week.'
Paula had turned in all her forms and was ready to transfer to Munstertal. Esteban wished her well and asked Paula to let him know if there were any openings.
Capt. Willis said, 'Ms. Rapf. In my office, please.'
Paula entered and was ready for a hard goodbye. Capt. Willis was sitting behind his desk when Paula entered. 'Officer Rapf, reporting as ordered, sir.'
Willis said, 'I'm going to be as forthcoming as I can be, Officer Rapf.'
Paula said, 'Thank you, sir.'
Willis said, 'When an officer under my command leaves, I make it appoint to give that officer a proper sendoff.'
Paula said, 'Thank you, sir.'
Willis said, 'You've earned the respect of your peers and your subordinates. And you've earned the right to wear that uniform. I have no doubt that the Commandant in Munstertal will find you very adequate and useful in his ranks. I expect the absolute best out of the people under my command. The Commandant demands twice that much from the women under his.'
Paula replied, 'So I have heard, sir.'
Willis stood toe to toe with Paula and said, 'Then you hear this one more thing. If you screw up one homicide case, and you won't even be fit to clean up horse shit at the Piccadilly Parade!'
Paula said, 'Yes, sir!'
Willis patted Paula on the shoulder and said, 'That is all. You'll report to your First Lieutenant in 2 days hence. And Officer Rapf..' Paula looked at Willis' face as he finished, 'good luck.'
Paula said, 'Thank you, sir' and walked out the door.
Standing beside the door at Mocca, Franzi was about to leave when Daniel approached her and the started talking about their times, her school work, working full time, sneaking around with Paula, and now all of this.
Franzi asked, 'Is Emily's therapy going fine?'
Daniel answered, 'She is responding well to her treatment. As to say she is participating and showing signs of life, remorse, and guilt.'
Franzi said, 'You tell her that I send my love everyday and that my strength is her strength.'
Daniel said, 'I will.'
When Daniel was about to lock up Mocca, he said, 'Franzi. You know this door will always be open.'
Franzi said, 'I know and thank you, Daniel. That really means a lot to me.'
Daniel asked, 'When do you start at The Rainbow?'
Franzi answered, '3:00 in 2 days. They're giving me a day to get moved in and sorted out. Even though we're already moved in.' Then she kissed Daniel on the cheek.
Franzi hugged Daniel and said, 'I love you, Daniel.'
Daniel said, 'And I love you, too, Franzi.'
Daniel walked Franzi back to the flatshare. The two women and Daniel threw a simple going away party with a pizza and soda. Talking about all the good times they had over the years. Daniel promised to keep in touch and to stop by whenever he found the time.
